Yemen: 11 soldiers and presumed members of Al-Qaeda killed in battles
Eleven
persons, among whom two officers and soldiers, was killed in battles
between the Yemeni army and presumed members of Al-Qaeda in the south of
Yemen, as it was known on Saturday local and military sources.
"Elements
of Al-Qaeda parked in Dofas (in the province of Abyane) and furnished
with automatic weapons attacked on Friday an unit of the army, killing
two officers and four soldiers and by hurting nine others", declared to
the AFP a military representative in the village. Both killed officers
were colonels, he specified. Doctors to the military hospital of Aden,
main city of the south of Yemen, confirmed this statement.
A local
representative in Dofas, in 15 km in the south of Zinjibar, the capital
of the province of Abyane, declared that five members of Al-Qaeda had
been killed and four other injured men in these battles.
On May
29th, hundreds of armed men affiliated to the "Charia supporters
(Islamic law)", a group suspected of maintaining links with Al-Qaeda,
had taken the control of Zinjibar, pushing to the exodus its terrorised
citizens. But the army, with the support of tribes until then rather
favourable to Al-Qaeda and a logistical help of the United States, began
resuming of the ground. Al-Qaeda in the Arabic peninsula (Aqpa), born
in a fusion of the Yemeni and Saudi branches of Al-Qaeda in January,
2009, is active in the south and is from Yemen, where attacks against
security forces are regularly allocated to the terrorist organization.
